The Anti-Cancer Diet : Cancer Fighting Foods and Spices

The National Cancer Institute estimates that roughly one-third of all cancer deaths may be diet related. What you eat can hurt you, but it can also help you. Many of the common foods found in grocery stores or organic markets contain cancer-fighting properties, from the antioxidants that neutralize the damage caused by free radicals to the powerful phytochemicals that scientists are just beginning to explore. There isn’t a single element in a particular food that does all the work: The best thing to do is eat a variety of foods.Greens cooking in a skillet.

Laetrile and Information on Vitamin B17

Since Laetrile is not considered an approved treatment for cancer in the United States, websites that sell it as a cure for cancer are being shut down.  These sites include David Arjona’s www.worldwithoutcancer.com and Jason Vale‘swww.apricotsfromgod.com.

Why are Laetrile and many other substances used in alternative-cancer therapy not readily available in the U.S.?

The short answer is that these substances are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The full answer, however, is a bit more complex. The reason they do not carry approval is that they have not undergone the extensive FDA testing that all new drugs must pass before being approved for common use. That’s the law in the United States. This process takes years of research work, requires tens of thousands of pages of reports, and costs hundreds of millions of dollars. The only firms that can afford this are large pharmaceutical companies. Not even they will undertake such expense unless they can eventually make a profit through sales, and that means they must obtain a patent on the substance being tested. However, substances found in nature cannot be patented, only man-made chemicals and processes can. Since Laetrile and many other substances used in alternative-cancer treatments are found in nature, they cannot be patented. That means they will never be tested according to FDA protocol. Consequently, they will never be officially approved no matter how effective they may be. That is why you often hear it said that alternative cancer therapies are “unproven.” That is a very misleading statement. They may not have been proven by FDA protocol, but many of them definitely have been proven as both safe and effective by actual clinical experience in the treatment of thousands of cancer patients. Unfortunately, until the laws are changed, the only officially approved substances we will ever have for the treatment of cancer in the United States are man-made, patented chemicals!

The following foods have the ability to help stave off cancer and some can even help inhibit cancer cell growth or reduce tumor size.

Avocados are rich in glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals in the body by blocking intestinal absorption of certain fats. They also supply even more potassium than bananas and are a strong source of beta-carotene. Scientists also believe that avocados may also be useful in treating viral hepatitis (a cause of liver cancer), as well as other sources of liver damage.

Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower have a chemical component called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective variety. Broccoli, especially sprouts, also have the phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin – believed to aid in preventing some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer. Sulforaphane induces the production of certain enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens. The enzymes have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors in laboratory animals. However, be aware that the Agriculture Department studied 71 types of broccoli plants and found a 30-fold difference in the amounts of glucoraphanin. It appears that the more bitter the broccoli is, the more glucoraphanin it has. Broccoli sprouts have been developed under the trade name BroccoSprouts that have a consistent level of sulforaphane – as much as 20 times higher than the levels found in mature heads of broccoli.)

Carrots contain a lot of beta carotene, which may help reduce a wide range of cancers including lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast. Some research indicated beta carotene may actually cause cancer, but this has not proven that eating carrots, unless in very large quantities – 2 to 3 kilos a day, can cause cancer. In fact, a substance called falcarinol that is found in carrots has been found to reduce the risk of cancer, according to researchers at Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS). Kirsten Brandt, head of the research department, explained that isolated cancer cells grow more slowly when exposed to falcarinol. This substance is a polyacethylen, however, so it is important not to cook the carrots.

Chili peppers and jalapenos contain a chemical, capsaicin, which may neutralize certain cancer-causing substances (nitrosamines) and may help prevent cancers such as stomach cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain two antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin that may help decrease prostate and other cancers.

Figs apparently have a derivative of benzaldehyde. It has been reported that investigators at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Tokyo say benzaldehyde is highly effective at shrinking tumors, though I haven’t seen this report. In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says figs, which contain vitamins A and C, and calcium, magnesium and potassium, may curtail appetite and improve weight-loss efforts. Fig juice is also a potent bacteria killer in test-tube studies. Fig tree full of fruit

Flax contains lignans, which may have an antioxidant effect and block or suppress cancerous changes. Flax is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are thought to protect against colon cancer and heart disease.

Garlic has immune-enhancing allium compounds (dialyl sultides) that appear to increase the activity of immune cells that fight cancer and indirectly help break down cancer causing substances. These substances also help block carcinogens from entering cells and slow tumor development. Diallyl sulfide, a component of garlic oil, has also been shown to render carcinogens in the liver inactive. Studies have linked garlic — as well as onions, leeks, and chives — to lower risk of stomach and colon cancer. Dr. Lenore Arab, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the UNC-CH (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) schools of public health and medicine and colleagues analyzed a number of studies and reported their findings in the October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. According to the report, people who consume raw or cooked garlic regularly face about half the risk of stomach cancer and two-thirds the risk of colorectal cancer as people who eat little or none. Their studies didn’t show garlic supplements had the same effect. It is believed garlic may help prevent stomach cancer because it has anti-bacterial effects against a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, found in the stomach and known to promote cancer there.

Grapefruits, like oranges and other citrus fruits, contain monoterpenes, believed to help prevent cancer by sweeping carcinogens out of the body. Some studies show that grapefruit may inhibit the proliferation of breast-cancer cells in vitro. They also contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, and folic acid.

Grapes, red contain bioflavonoids, powerful antioxidants that work as cancer preventives. Grapes are also a rich source of resveratrol, which inhibits the enzymes that can stimulate cancer-cell growth and suppress immune response. They also contain ellagic acid, a compound that blocks enzymes that are necessary for cancer cells – this appears to help slow the growth of tumors.

Studies show that consumption of green and yellow leafy vegetables has been associated with lower levels of stomach cancer.

Colorful foods.

Kale has indoles, nitrogen compounds which may help stop the conversion of certain lesions to cancerous cells in estrogen-sensitive tissues. In addition, isothiocyanates, phytochemicals found in kale, are thought to suppress tumor growth and block cancer-causing substances from reaching their targets.

Licorice root has a chemical, glycyrrhizin, that blocks a component of testosterone and therefore may help prevent the growth of prostate cancer. However, excessive amounts can lead to elevated blood pressure.

Mushrooms – There are a number of mushrooms that appear to help the body fight cancer and build the immune system – Shiitake, maitake, reishi, Agaricus blazei Murill, and Coriolus Versicolor. These mushrooms contain polysaccharides, especially Lentinan, powerful compounds that help in building immunity. They are a source of Beta Glucan. They also have a protein called lectin, which attacks cancerous cells and prevents them from multiplying. They also contain Thioproline. These mushrooms can stimulate the production of interferon in the body.

Extracts from mushrooms have been successfully tested in recent years in Japan as an adjunct to chemotherapy. PSK is made from the Coriolus Versicolor. Maitake mushroom extract is PCM4.

Nuts contain the antioxidants quercetin and campferol that may suppress the growth of cancers. Brazil nut contains 80 micrograms of selenium, which is important for those with prostate cancer. (Note: Many people are allergic to the proteins in nuts, so if you have any symptoms such as itchy mouth, tight throat, wheezing, etc. after eating nuts, stop. Consider taking a selenium supplement instead or work with someone on how to eliminate this allergy.)

Healthy Nuts

Oranges and lemons contain Iimonene which stimulates cancer-killing immune cells (lymphocytes, e.g.) that may also break down cancer-causing substances.)

Papayas have vitamin C that works as an antioxidant and may also reduce absorption of cancer-causing nitrosamines from the soil or processed foods. Papaya contains folacin (also known as folic acid), which has been shown to minimize cervical dysplasia and certain cancers.

Raspberries contain many vitamins, minerals, plant compounds and antioxidants known as anthocyanins that may protect against cancer. According to a recent research study reported by Cancer Research 2001;61:6112-6119, rats fed diets of 5% to 10% black raspberries saw the number of esophageal tumors decrease by 43% to 62%. A diet containing 5% black raspberries was more effective than a diet containing 10% black raspberries. Research reported in the journal Nutrition and Cancer in May 2002 shows black raspberries may also thwart colon cancer. Black raspberries are rich in antioxidants, thought to have even more cancer-preventing properties than blueberries and strawberries.berries-foods-fight-cancer

Red wine, even without alcohol, has polyphenols that may protect against various types of cancer. Polyphenols are potent antioxidants, compounds that help neutralize disease-causing free radicals.  Also, researchers at the University of North Carolina’s medical school in Chapel Hill found the compound resveratrol, which is found in grape skins. It appears that resveratrol inhibits cell proliferation and can help prevent cancer. However, the findings didn’t extend to heavy imbibers, so it should be used in moderation. In addition, alcohol can be  toxic to the liver and to the nervous system, and many wines have sulfites, which may be harmful to your health. Note:  some research indicates that alcohol is considered a class “A” carcinogen which can actually cause cancer – You should  switch to non-alcoholic wines.

)

Rosemary may help increase the activity of detoxification enzymes. An extract of rosemary, termed carnosol, has inhibited the development of both breast and skin tumors in animals. We haven’t found any studies done on humans. Rosemary can be used as a seasoning. It can also be consumed as a tea: Use 1 tsp. dried leaves per cup of hot water; steep for 15 minutes.

Seaweed and other sea vegetables contain beta-carotene, protein, vitamin B12, fiber, and chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones – important fatty acids that may help in the fight against breast cancer. Many sea vegetables also have high concentrations of the minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and iodine.

Soy products like tofu contain several types of phytoestrogens — weak, nonsteroidal estrogens that could help prevent both breast and prostate cancer by blocking and suppressing cancerous changes. There are a number of isoflavones in soy products, but research has shown that genistein is the most potent inhibitor of the growth and spread of cancerous cells. It appears to lower breast-cancer risk by inhibiting the growth of epithelial cells and new blood vessels that tumors require to flourish and is being scrutinized as a potential anti-cancer drug. However, there are some precautions to consider when adding soy to your diet. Eating up to 4 or 5 ounces of tofu or other soy a day is probably ok, but research is being done to see if loading up on soy could cause hormone imbalances that stimulate cancer growth. As a precaution, women who have breast cancer or are at high risk should talk to their doctors before taking pure isoflavone powder and pills, extracted from soy.

Sweet potatoes contain many anticancer properties, including beta-carotene, which may protect DNA in the cell nucleus from cancer-causing chemicals outside the nuclear membrane.

Teas: Green Tea and Black tea contain certain antioxidants known as polyphenols (catechins) which appear to prevent cancer cells from dividing. Green tea is best, followed by our more common black tea (herbal teas do not show this benefit). According to a report in the July 2001 issue of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these polyphenols that are abundant in green tea, red wine and olive oil, may protect against various types of cancer. Dry green tea leaves, which are about 40% polyphenols by weight, may also reduce the risk of cancer of the stomach, lung, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas, study findings have suggested.

Tapioca is derived from the cassava plant. It is one of the many plants that manufactures cyanide by producing a chemical called linamarine which releases hydrogen cyanide when it is broken down by the linamarase enzyme. Spanish researches have been studying the cassava and attempting to clone the genes from the plant which are responsible for producing the hydrogen cyanide and then transfer it to a retrovirus. However, funding for the project has run out.http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_317000/317467.stm for more information on this.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that attacks roaming oxygen molecules, known as free radicals, that are suspected of triggering cancer. It appears that the hotter the weather, the more lycopene tomatoes produce. They also have vitamin C, an antioxidant which can prevent cellular damage that leads to cancer. Watermelons, carrots, and red peppers also contain these substances, but in lesser quantities. It is concentrated by cooking tomatoes.  Scientists in Israel have shown that lycopene can kill mouth cancer cells. An increased intake of lycopene has already been linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer. (Note: Recent studies indicate that for proper absorption, the body also needs some oil along with lycopene.)

heirloom grape tomatoes differ in color and taste)

Tumeric (curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, is believed to have medicinal properties because it inhibits production of the inflammation-related enzyme cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), levels of which are abnormally high in certain inflammatory diseases and cancers, especially bowel and colon cancer. In fact, a pharmaceutical company Phytopharm in the UK hopes to introduce a natural product, P54, that contains certain volatile oils, which greatly increase the potency of the turmeric spice.

Turnips are said to contain glucose molaes which is a cancer fighting compound. I haven’t confirmed this.

Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been associated with decreased risk of cancers of the colon and rectum.

There are many good books on this topic, including Vern Verona’s book on “Cancer Fighting Foods.”

Fertility Foods: Which Foods for Fertility You Should Eat To Boost Your Fertility

The following list of fertility foods includes all the important key foods that boost fertility and that nourish the reproductive organs assisting in healthy production of eggs and sperm. Fertility FoodsIt is best to start eating these foods at least four months before conception is attempted. It takes about that time to mature healthy sperm and to for the female follicles to develop within the ovary. Every month, as these follicles growth, only one reaches maturity and releases the egg that will be fertilized.

It takes 150 days for an egg to grow from a follicle into a ready-to-be-released egg. The healthier your ovarian tissue is, the higher your chances of having high quality eggs. The role of fertility foods for men and for women is to assist the body during gametogenesis (the formation of eggs and sperm) and facilitate conception.

Maca

This wonderful super food has the ability to balance your hormones and increase egg quality and sperm count. It is a tonic for the entire endocrine system and it is especially useful to women who do not produce enough progesterone and suffer from luteal phase defect. This also helps prevent miscarriages due to this reason. In men, Maca increases libido, helps have strong erections, regulates testosterone production and increases sperm quality.

Goji

Goji has long been used by Asian physicians for the treatment of infertility in both men and women. Goji berries grow on an evergreen shrub found in temperate and subtropical regions in China, Mongolia and in the Himalayas in Tibet. Goji is a powerful anti-oxidant which can help reverse the effects of over-heating of sperm. It also increases sperm count and viability of the sperm. In women, Goji helps prevent premature ovarian failure. These berries also increase libido in both men and women.

Blue-Green Algae

Spirinula and chlorella are blue-green algae that contain chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Spirinula is a saltwater, while chlorella is freshwater algae, but both nourish the endocrine and nervous system, giving support to the immune system, regulate the metabolism and aid in tissue repair. These single cell blue-green algae are like green blood and supply the body with all the necessary nutrients for proper functioning.

They are high dense fertility foods which gently detoxify the organism and replenish nutrient deficiency, thus enhancing reproduction. They can be used to reduces pre-menstrual syndrome, increase fertility, stimulates the thyroid gland, and repair damaged DNA/RNA cells. When talking these fertility foods, start with small amounts and increase slowly over time.

Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is the greatest among all the fertility foods because it is a natural source of steroid hormones which control a wide range of female reproductive functions including ovulation, menstruation, libido, and fertilization. In men, royal jelly helps increase sexual stamina and it is used to treat impotence. It contains enzymes and it is an excellent source of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, and genetic material like DNA and RNA, which are critical for cellular repair as well as for synthesis of new cells. Royal jelly is the food of the queen bee, whose job in life is to produce large quantities of eggs. The queen bee takes royal jelly exclusively and has a life span of about six years compared to the life span of a worker bee which is only of about two months. Sublingual doses of royal gently are very therapeutic because royal jelly, when taken in this way, is immediately utilized by the body through the blood.

Bee Pollen

Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is a great natural, healthy, and highly nutritious food that is especially useful to increase sperm production. In men, it also improves the quality of semen and support prostate health. In women, bee pollen is useful in supporting ovarian function by stimulating natural ovulation.

Bee Propolis

This great product from the bee hive has incredible powers among which to stimulate the immune system and anti-inflammatory properties. It is very useful to both men and women, but especially to women who suffer from endometriosis.

Note:

Fertility foods and products from the bee world are great in addressing infertility but some people develop a reaction. So be careful if you choose to add these super fertility foods to your diet. If you have allergies to pollens you might react to these products, so talk to a qualified practitioner before taking them. Also, make sure you choose high grade bee supplements from a clean and pure environment.

Green Superfoods and Sea Vegetables

Green Superfoods are rich in phytonutrients coming from cereal grasses (alfalfa, barley, rye, wheat grass, etc.) and algae or sea vegetables. They are foods that contain high amounts of enzymes, chlorophyll, vitamins, amino acids, fiber, antioxidants, minerals and other important nutrients. Sea vegetables are notorious for giving longevity and vitality to those cultures that include them into their daily diet. They prevent mineral deficiencies related to infertility, increasing ovarian function in women, sperm count in men and providing hormonal regulation in both.

Make A Fertility Smoothie With Fertility FoodsThere are many important sea vegetables which are source of vitamins and minerals in a very natural and easily available form. Kombu (Laminaria) is rich in iron, Rockweed in calcium, Bladderwrack in potassium, Dulse and Kelp (Ecklonia) in iodine, and Sea Lettuce (Ulva) in magnesium.

Other nutrient rich sea vegetables are Alaria (Ribbon Kelp), Sea Whistle, and Macrocystis. All sea vegetables contain high amounts of minerals and trace elements like iodine, zinc, boron, iron, selenium, magnesium, calcium, and chromium. They also contain high amounts of Vitamin K, B Vitamins (B12, folate), Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Vitamin A. These sea vegetables have a number of different common names that honestly it is quite hard to keep track of all of them.

Each location has a different common name depending where they are grown and harvested. Their health benefits are huge that’s why they are considered superfoods for many health conditions like immune dysfunctions, chronic diseases, hormonal imbalances. Sea vegetables contain lignans, which are phytonutrients that lower circulating estrogens and play a very important role in inhibiting tumor growth.

Wheat Grass

Wheat grass restores hormonal function, nourishes the blood, enhances immunity and works as a great reproductive tonic. It is also an excellent detoxifier that removes heavy metals from the body and may be involved in decreasing infertility and miscarriages caused by heavy metal toxicity. The most important component of wheatgrass is chlorophyll, which plays a role in making the body more alkaline, thus helping restore pH balance. An acidic vaginal environment is extremely hostile to sperm, while an alkaline uterine environment is necessary for implantation and may possibly prevent miscarriage. Chlorophyll improves problems with blood sugar metabolism which seems to be related to anovulatory problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome causing infertility.

Vegetable Juice Is Not Just for Detox

A juicer is your secret weapon not only for detox but for good health and longevity. By juicing a selection of fresh vegetables every day you can dramatically increase your intake of natural enzymes and antioxidants. Both can help delay the aging process and prevent disease. Health isn’t something that can turned on or off over night. It’s what you consume every day that counts.

You have probably heard that you should eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day but do you? If you do you are in the minority because most people don’t. Shocking statistics reveal that in the USA the average adult manages to eat just one and a half portions of fruit and vegetables a day!
In the UK  65% eat only one portion. They eat too much of the wrong food and too little of the right foods.

What’s so special about fresh vegetable juices?

Drinking vegetable juices every day is a wonderfully healthy habit. They are great for alkalizing the body have a great health building effect. Organic vegetables are loaded with chlorophyll, iron, calcium, numerous other minerals, vitamins and amino acids. While fresh juicing organic vegetables is no  substitute for the whole food it’s a great way to pack nutrient dense structures into your body that are free of pesticides, preservatives, nitrites and other junk.

Fresh vegetable juices just flood your body with nutrients. Many people have limited ability to absorb all the nutrients from whole vegetables. As a result of poor food choices over the years the digestion becomes compromised. Juicing is great way of  getting more nutrition into your body. They need very little digestion in the stomach are are rapidly taken up by the blood which carries the nutrients around the body nourishing revitalizing your cells.

Fresh vegetable juicing forms the basis of many healing regimes. A lot of doctors found that their patients recovered from all manner of diseases when they were put on a diet that consisted largely of fresh juices.

What’s wrong with carton or bottled juice?

But why go the bother of juicing when the supermarket shelves are brimming with all sorts of combinations of fruit and vegetable juices? Although ready made juices are probably better than no juices at all vegetable juice is best drunk fresh to get the benefits of all the nutrients and enzymes.

Unless fresh juices are consumed within a couple of hours of making they start to lose vitality and nutrients. Enzyme activity starts to reduce the longer the juice is left to stand. Many commercially made juices are pasteurized or sterilized to give them a longer shelf life. They are “dead” food.

Fresh food contains a life force or vitality that is not easily measured. Kirlian photography has demonstrated how fresh organic produce is surrounded by an energy field that is quite different from cooked food.

Some manufacturers import cheap produce from countries that are using many pesticides. They penetrate the body and are made from cheap. Some contain a whole host of additives, colorings and flavorings. It’s a case of reading the labels and choosing the most natural, untreated and freshest juice if you have to buy it off the shelf.

Green Vegetable Juices

Chlorophyll is the magic substance in green vegetables. It is known as the blood of plants as its chemical structure is very similar to the “heme” of hemoglobin in human blood. It carries oxygen which rapidly improves blood oxygenation and helps cleanse the body.

Experiments with chlorophyll have shown that it increases tissue cell activity and normal regrowth. It can help neutralize the toxic effects of some mutagens (things that change your genes and can cause cancer) which are ever present in our food and water.

Chlorophyll helps to strengthen cells and removes toxic, synthetic chemicals and heavy metals. The adhesive cellulose in its cell wall sticks to the metal atoms so they’re carried out as waste.

Get started with Green Vegetable Juices

If you have never tasted green juices before you might find them a bit earthy in flavor but you can soon remedy that. Try adding an organic apple or a few organic seedless grapes. Start off by using the milder tasting green leaves like Red leaf lettuce, Green Leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce, Lamb’s quarters or Escarole. You can use celery and cucumber too. Try adding watercress or
arugula (rocket) to give it a bit of pep.

Then experiment with green cabbage leaves, Chinese cabbage, Bok choy, spinach, parsley or cilantro (fresh coriander). Add bitter leaves like Collard greens, Kale, Mustard and turnip greens when you get used to the taste. Pep the vegetable juices up even more with freshly grated root ginger, garlic and radish. Add a teaspoon of your favorite green food.

Children love green juices made with enough strawberries or raspberries to make the drink red. Add some Stevia, a natural sweetener, if absolutely necessary.

Warning about carrot and beet juice

Carrot juice is a favorite vegetable to juice or to add to juices but there is some concern that sweet vegetables like carrot and beet can raise blood sugar levels and trigger insulin. Over time this can cause metabolic syndrome. This can be avoided to a certain extent by adding a tablespoon of a cold pressed oil to an 8oz carrot or beet juice juice as it slows down absorption from the stomach.

If you are diabetic you should start with 4 oz of these sweet juices diluted with 4 ox pure water. Ideally add only a little carrot or beet juice to a green juice. Green juices can help the pancreas in repairing itself.

Metabolic types and juicing

Vegetable juicing is particularly good if you are a carbohydrate type but it’s better to avoid fruit juices as they are high in sugar. You can make fruit smoothies instead.

If you are a protein type you will do best if you only juice the vegetables for your type such as celery, spinach, asparagus, string beans and cauliflower and only have a small amount.  Adding some fat to the juice such as avocado, coconut butter or ground flax seed would help. Try adding a scoop of a good protein powder too.

Juicing is fun and with a little imagination you can make up hundreds of recipes. Leave your favorite recipe in the comments box.

Foods to Add to the Brain!!!!!!!! Eating Plans to Help Improve Brain Function

Food is an easy way to improve brain function because you can build up the nutrients and chemicals needed for your brain to operate at maximum efficiency while also enhancing your overall health. Have you ever noticed if you skip a meal or two you have difficulty concentrating, or perhaps you become a little irritable? That’s your brain telling you it needs a new supply of nutrition to operate properly.

Essential fatty acids– many people are led to believe that dietary fats are bad. However certain fats obtained from foods are critical for optimal brain health. Your brain cells depend on fats for construction, repair, and ongoing communication.

Unsaturated fats are those that must be obtained from diet because the body cannot create them. Among the most important of these are unsaturated omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids are plentiful in the typical American diet, it’s the omega-3 fatty acids that are less plentiful in our diet.

Water – water is required for survival 70 % of your brain is water. Each of us needs to drink plenty of water to maintain proper brain function. If you don’t consume enough water every day you will become dehydrated. When your brain becomes dehydrated, it is harder for your brain to make connections and recall information. You will easily become confused and disoriented. Stay hydrated if you expect your brain to keep working at its best.

Antioxidants and free radicalsOxidative damage caused by free radicals is responsible for much of the aging of our brain and other parts of our body. Free radicals damage various parts of our cells. The body’s defenses for neutralizing these free radicals are antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules of various sizes and shapes that protect the brain and the body from free radicals and oxidative damage.

1. Blueberries – The levels of antioxidants found in blueberries help slow down oxidation of the brain. Not only do these chemicals help reduce the risk of mental diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as some cancers, they also can result in increased memory and motor skill function.

2. Black Currants – Black currants not only help protect brain cells, they are also jammed packed with antioxidants. They protect the cells found in hippocampus, a part of the brain which helps usher in information to be remembered and stored in other parts of the brain. The darker the color, the more rich in antioxidants they are.
